About the Butte Montana Area
At 5,484 feet we are the "other" Mile High City. During its mining heyday in the early 1900s, Butte was once considered the "richest hill on earth" due to the vast amount of copper that could be mined here. During this time, Butte boomed with a population of nearly 100,000.
The Upper Clark Fork River, with Butte at the headwaters, is America's largest Superfund site. This area takes in the cities of Butte, Anaconda, and Missoula. Our southwestern Montana town celebrates both our historical mining past as well as our current growth in a variety of fields including high tech, engineering, health care, education and cultural arts.
Today, Butte is home to one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States. We have 4,500 buildings listed as national historic sites or buildings. Butte has a diverse economic base directed by healthcare, energy research, education, silicon-based manufacturing, transportation and tourism. Our surrounding mountains offer a variety of year-round outdoor activities including hik-ing, camping, skiing, snowmobiling, hunting, horseback riding, and fishing. We also offer a full-service airport.
Butte shares its Neilsen television market with nearby Bozeman, with which it forms the 194th largest TV market in the United States. Butte has the distinction of being near the dividing line in terms of Pro-Sports markets, so the city receives both Seattle and Denver teams games on local cable channels.
Butte has one local daily, a weekly paper, as well as several papers from around the state of Mon-tana.
• The Montana Standard is Butte's daily paper. It was founded in 1928 and is the result of The Butte Min-er and the Anaconda Standard merging into one daily paper. The Standard is owned by Lee Enterpris-es.
• The Butte Weekly is a local paper.
Butte is a fine place to live, where you can enjoy the surrounding history and prosper with Butte’s economic growth. For more information about all that Butte has to offer, please visit
